Race speed the key for Foreteller in Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes

Chris Waller’s Melbourne stable fear the chances of Foreteller in the Group 2 $250,000 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday could be affected by the fronting running tactics of last start Moonee Valley winner The Cleaner.

Waller’s Melbourne foreperson Justine Hales believes if The Cleaner sets a decent tempo as he did in his all the way win over this course and distance on August 2, Foreteller’s usual sit and sprint pattern of racing might be his undoing.

Hales is hoping that Foreteller’s toughness and class will prevail on the day and said that he is ready to run a nice race after a handy first up fourth to Star Rolling in the Group 2 $200,000 Back To Caulfield P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 16.

“It should suit him, he’ll definitely get his chance, we just hope The Cleaner doesn’t get too far ahead,” Hales told the Sportsman.

“But foreteller in the genuine weight for age horse in the race.”

“In the Australian Cup last year he didn’t like it that much when the leader got out a long way in front but hopefully Star Rolling can give him a cart into the race.”

“He’s very honest, he loves being a racehorse.”

“He hit the line really strongly first-up and he pulled up really well after the race. He is definitely forward enough to run well.”

Foreteller hasn’t been to the winner’s stall since winning the Group 1 $350,000 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on this weekend last year but has been Group 1 placed twice since.

The French import ran second to Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 $400,000 Cathay Pacific Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 12 two runs after his win in the Makybe Diva Stakes and filled the third place spot behind Fiorente in the Group 1 $1m Darley Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington during the 2014 Melbourne Autumn Carnival.

Foreteller is on the third line of betting at $6.50 for the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes with Ladbrokes.com.au who have Star Rolling the $4.40 favourite just ahead of The Cleaner at $4.80.

The Gai Waterhouse trained The Offer is making his first 2014 Spring Carnival appearance and the Melbourne Cup favourite is marked as a $11 chance at his first run since winning the Group 1 $1m Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 19.
