You could forgive Guy Walter for not enjoying a lot of success with Pentasia during the short period he oversaw her work.

After she debuted with a neat second placing over 1000m Walter did the obvious thing with a horse of her breeding and stepped her up gradually in distance.

Unfortunately though she went downhill from there never looking like a threat in her races which stretched out to the mile.

With that she was sent to Marc Quinn at Port Macquarie and he’s been just as surprised as anyone with her recent success.

She’s won twice and placed once from three starts for Quinn with the telling factor being that she hasn’t gone past 1200m.

“Being by Pentire out of a Singspiel mare you would have thought the obvious and said she was a mile-and-a-half (2400m) horse,” Quinn said.

“But she’s a neat, compact horse rather than being long and rangy like a stayer.

“She has always shown a turn of foot so all I do is keep her fresh and happy.”

She will race tomorrow at Canterbury over 1100m and if she performs there’s every chance her next start will be against city company.

“As it stands at the moment she is almost graded out of country racing,” Quinn said.

“If she can keep progressing, there are races like the Triscay Stakes and the Breeders Classic coming up.

“My job is to get some black type alongside her name to increase her value as a broodmare but I’ll need to get her rating up to get into those races.”

Pentasia is a four year old and on debut for Quinn last October she shocked everyone with a massive 13 length winning margin at Grafton.

She went to Gosford from there and missed out narrowly before bouncing back with a nearly four length triumph at Wyong on Magic Millions day.

Glyn Schofield is one man who’s certainly taken notice, he was quick to snap up the ride at Canterbury tomorrow where she looks a good hope.

“Glyn was more than happy to take the ride at Canterbury so that’s usually a good sign,” Quinn said.

“If the emergencies don’t get a start she’ll come in to barrier four and with the rail out six metres that will be in her favour.”
