The Charlie Appleby trained Qewy is one of seventeen stayers nominated for the Sandown Cup and is coming off a last start fourth to Almandin in the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington last Tuesday.

Qewy earned a start in the Melbourne Cup with a tough all the way win in the Group 3 $300,000 Geelong Cup (2400m) at Geelong on October 19 and with only 50.5kg on his back ran a mighty race to grab fourth spot in Australia’s greatest race.

Appleby has had a tremendous Spring Carnival and as well as Qewy earning plenty of prizemoney, stablemate Oceanographer also gained a start in the Melbourne Cup to finish twelfth after winning the Group 3 $300,000 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Derby Day.

The Newmarket trainer also saddled up Francis Of Assisi for wins in the Group 3 $300,000 Jayco Bendigo Cup (2400m) at Bendigo on October 26 and in the Group 3 $300,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington last Saturday.

“We have one more roll of the dice next weekend, all being well we have Qewy in the Sandown Cup,” Appleby said.

“If we can sigh off with one more winner can pack on home and look forward to next year.”

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig have nominated Melbourne Cup sixth placegetter Almoonqith and restricted class stayer Bullish Stock for the Sandown Cup.

Chris Waller has nominated Four Carat and Murphy’s Delight while Darren Weir has only one entry in the consistent Firenze.

Trained Danny O’Brien has entered De Little Engine who has been racing well over the Melbourne Spring Carnival without figuring in the major end of the prizemoney.

Two starts back De Little Engine just missed out on gaining a start in the Melbourne Cup when fourth to Oceanographer in the Lexus Stakes and then ran fourth again to Francis Of Assisi in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The final field for the Sandown Cup will be released on Wednesday morning, November 9.
