Proisir may be the number two colt in his stable but he gets the opportunity to put his name up in lights this Saturday when he starts among the top chances in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Warwick Farm.

The talented three-year-old often lives in the shadow of superstar stablemate Pierro but gets the chance to join the Group 1 club this weekend without the Golden Slipper winner getting in the way.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse elected to wait another week to take on the older horses in the Canterbury Stakes with Pierro who would have started a commanding favourite in Saturday’s three-year-old feature.

Proisir may not have quite the profile of Pierro but lost no admirers with a strong first-up Hobartville Stakes third behind his classy stablemate and Randwick Guineas favourite Rebel Dane.

The son of Choisir is a $3.40 chance to turn the tables on Rebel Dane who heads betting at $2.80.

Trackwork rider Mark Newnham put the lightly-raced colt through his final piece of serious work on Tuesday and told Waterhouse he was impressed with what he saw.

“One word response came from Mark when describing Proisir,” Waterhouse said in her blog.

“The word this time was super.

“Proisir worked over 1200m, coming home his last 200m in 11 flat.”

It seems only a matter of time before Proisir succeeds at Group 1 level, having finished a narrow runner-up to It’s A Dundeel in the Spring Champion Stakes in October before running eighth in the Cox Plate.

The obvious obstacle to him taking out Saturday’s $500,000 event is Rebel Dane who has announced himself as a serious racehorse with four wins from five starts to begin his career.
