With Gai Waterhouse’s boom colt Pierro expected to bypass the Australian Guineas and run first-up in the Newmarket Handicap, the door could open for Proisir to spearhead the Sydney trainer’s charge in the $600,000 three-year-old race.

Waterhouse is yet to confirm plans for her number two colt but the bookies are wary of the emerging galloper who sits on the third line of Australian Guineas betting at $8 behind pin-up horses All Too Hard ($3) and Pierro ($7).

The son of Choisir gave the public a glimpse of of his talent in the spring with a number of performances suggesting he has a big future as a racehorse.

He won the first three starts of his career in scintillating style including a six-length walloping of his rivals in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle before going down narrowly to It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes.

Proisir was then tested on the biggest stage in the Cox Plate and while he showed he wasn’t quite ready to take on the older horses he battled gamely to finish in eighth position.

Waterhouse is thrilled with how the exciting prospect has come back from his time in the spelling paddock and is predicting a big autumn.

“I can’t tell you how good Proisir has come back, Pierro also, but it was Proisir who really knocked my socks off at the pool,” Waterhouse said in her blog.

“I hate seeing rib on my horses and Proisir definitely was not showing any rib.

“He is big and robust and just the most impressive looking colt.”
