Premiership trainer Darren Weir will give Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance a short 2016 Autumn Carnival campaign before preparing him to defend his title at Flemington in the Spring.

Prince Of Penzance was tipped out for a well-deserved spell after claiming an historical win with Michelle Payne in the saddle in the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the First Tuesday In November.

Payne became the first female jockey to win the famous two mile race at Flemington when the $101 chance hit the line first ahead a handy field of stayers, beating the English raider Max Dynamite and local star Criterion.

Weir also claimed his first Melbourne Cup winning trophy and will set Prince Of Penzance for another Spring Carnival campaign in 2016 after a short Autumn preparation.

“He won’t be doing much his next campaign,” Weir told racing .com.

“He is going to have a good break, he is doing really well at the farm. He is a happy horse, putting on a bit of weight.”

“We will probably look at just giving him a run in Adelaide, a mile race over there that suits. A very light program over there and then just focus on the Spring again next year.”

“The Moonee Valley Cup might be a bit more realistic. But he will get into all those sort of races.”

Prince Of Penzance won the 2014 Group 2 $250,000 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley and then ran second to The United States in this year’s version before heading to Flemington for the Melbourne Cup.

But Weir knows that if he follows the same path next year, the job will be harder with the expected added weight that the handicapper will through at him.

“He is going to go up a lot in weight, he is going to have a lot against him I would have thought, but he has done his job.”

“But it would be nice if he got back and raced well again. But if he doesn’t we certainly won’t be heartbroken.”

Even though Prince Of Penzance ran a gutsy second in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup in his final lead up run to the Melbourne Cup, he was unwanted in the betting and was sent out as the equal outsider of the twenty-four horse field with Sertorius.

An inspired ride by Payne in a slowly run race saw her extradite the six year old from the fence at the 800m and put him in a winning position on the home turn before extending in the straight to record a half a length win.

Prince Of Penzance’s Melbourne Cup victory took his record to seven wins from twenty-four starts and pumped his earnings to $4.4 million.

In early betting for the 2016 Melbourne Cup, Larbrokes.com.au have Prince Of Penzance a $41 chance to win back to back title.

The Aidan O’Brien trained Irish stayer Order Of St George is at the top of the market order at $15 ahead of the Lloyd Williams owned Amralah, Japanese galloper Fame Game, Melbourne Cup runner-up Max Dynamite, Caulfield Cup quinella Mongolian Khan and Trip to Paris and Cox Place winner Winx, all at $21.
