An outside barrier didn’t stop Pretty Pins from causing a huge upset by winning the Group 3 $125,000 Landfill Logistics Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben today.

Winning jockey Ryan Wiggins was able to find the fence on Pretty Pins ($26) in the first one hundred metres after jumping from the outside gate and then followed the paint all the way before going around one horse in the run to the winning post to beat the odds on favourite Danchai ($1.90).

Brave Ali ($13) with Tegan Harrison in the saddle battled on well to hold onto third after setting the pace.

Trainer John Thompson was quick to give Wiggins a wrap after his winning ride, giving him a twelve out of ten pass mark.

“Watch the replay and watch Ryan’s ride, I reckon it was a twelve out of ten,” Thomson said.

“Outstanding. He went around one horse from the outside barrier.”

Pretty Pins’ win today was the Pins mare first victory in ten months and Thompson puts her new found winning form down to the blinkers going back on and the warmer Queensland weather.

“She turned the corner a little in Queensland, she has done well. We put the blinkers on to try to switch her on.”

Pretty Pins last visited the winner’s stall when she won a BenchMark 85 over 1600m at Randwick last August.

The five year old mare has been in work since January and was unplaced from four runs over the Sydney Autumn Carnival before returning to Brisbane for a last start fifth to Angel Of Mercy in the Listed $80,000 Winning Edge Trophies Members’ Handicap (1600m) at Eagle Farm on April 19.

The Chris Waller trained Danchai was given a lovely run by Nash Rawiller and after settling just behind the pace eased out on the home turn but couldn’t run down the winner who went to the line too strongly.

Heartfelt Quest ($12) did a good job to finish four lengths fifth after blowing the start when he reared as the gates opened.
