Caulfield’s contest will be round three for the two stayers after the Bart and James Cummings trained Precedence gained a two nil lead following their meeting in the Group 3 $300,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) last Saturday at Flemington.

Precedence with Craig Williams riding hard was first across the line with a nose decision going his way over Sertorius at the end of the 2600m.

But Ryan Maloney on Sertorius was quick to fire in an objection against the winner for interference over the final fifty metres, hoping to get the decision reversed in the stewards’ room.

The protest was quickly dismissed and Maloney will get another chance to turn tables on Saturday.

The weight for age Zipping Classic has pulled together a field of ten with Precedence, Williams aboard again, and Sertorius both coming up with good barrier draws.

Precedence from gate four and Sertorius from the rails are likely to stalk each other from the outset while the Gai Waterhouse trained Queenstown will cross from barrier eight and also be prominent.

Queenstown is also backing up from Flemington last week after going under by a nose to Girl Gone Rockin’ in the Group 2 $300,000 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m).

Precedence is racing in the best form of his career and is going for a hat trick after winning the Group 2 $250,000 Drake International Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

Then after failing to gain a start in the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 5, the eight year old was able to pick up a $100,000 bonus with his win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

James, who trains in partnership with his famous grandfather Bart Cummings, said that the master trainer was disappointed that Precedence missed a start in the Melbourne Cup but was happy to pick up the bonus that the Victoria Racing Club had on offer if the Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner was a final acceptor for the Melbourne Cup but failed to gain a start.

“He enjoyed his trip to Melbourne. He was a bit disappointed that the horse never got in the Melbourne Cup, but it is a good consolation here with the bonus,” James Cummings said.

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver has retained the ride on the Sam Kavanagh trained Midsummer Sun after the pair finished second to Salon Soldier in the Listed $150,000 Visit Victoria Plate (1800m) at Flemington on November 5.

Kavanagh is hoping the imported galloper will be able to pick up some more prizemoney before heading to the spelling paddock for a break prior to beginning an Autumn Carnival campaign.

“He’ll run in the Zipping Classic and I’ve booked Damien Oliver to ride,” Kavanagh told TVN.

“He’ll then go for a spell and be prepared for the Sydney autumn.”
