Potential Spring Stars on Show at Rosehill

An intriguing match race between a pair of exciting juveniles adds some serious spice to Saturday’s winter meeting at Rosehill.

Both Gai Waterhouse’s Bull Point and Bart Cummings’ Eurozone are colts that have already been touted as spring contenders and they will face off in the $85,000 Australian Turf Club Handicap (1200m).

There are five other horses in the two-year-old race but it certainly appears to be a race in two.

Bull Point, by top sire Fastnet Rock, indicated serious potential on June 10 when winning by two lengths on debut at Randwick while Eurozone also impressed in his one start to date.

When stepping out for the first time at Canterbury on June 19, the son of Northern Meteor was blocked for a run for much of the straight before flashing home to claim victory in the dying stages.

The juvenile race kicks off proceedings on the eight-race Rosehill program that also features the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m).

The $100,00 Civic Stakes contains eight runners including a Chris Waller-trained trio of Said Com, Disciple and Nocturnelle.

Said Com, a Group 1 runner-up in last year’s Randwick Guineas, is likely to start favourite but Nocturnelle is a dual Listed winner and Disciple has won two of his last three starts.

Also lining up in the Civic is Gai Waterhouse’s progressive last-start winner Under The Sun and Paul Messara-trained veteran Mic Mac.

Some serious injuries mean Mic Mac hasn’t won since taking out the Group 2 Memsie Stakes in 2009 but he showed promise when running on for fourth in the June Stakes last month.

The seven-year-old is a dual Group 2 winner and has collected more than $800,000 in prizemoney.
