Politeness Set For Tattersall’s Tiara

Trainer Robert Smerdon has confirmed that Politeness will be sent to Queensland for the 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at the Gold Coast on June 20.

Politeness hit the line strongly to finish sixth behind Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2 and Smerdon said that the Street Sense mare had taken no harm from the run and would head towards the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on June 6 before she returns to Group 1 level for the Tattersall’s Tiara.

“She’s come through her run in Adelaide well,” Smerdon said.

Politeness finished her 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a most impressive victory in the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) at Sandown on November 15 and she looked set for a big autumn preparation when she hit the line strongly to finish third in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) on February 14, but the four-year-old was plagued by foot issues that forced Smerdon to scratch her from the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 28 and the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 7 as well as rule her out of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 11.

Smerdon elected to set Politeness for the Robert Sangster Stakes and she returned to racing with a fast-finishing victory in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on April 18 before she made up plenty of ground late in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

Politeness will be joined in the Dane Ripper Stakes and Tattersall’s Tiara by stablemate Lumosty, who has not been seen at the races since she was beaten as favourite in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 6 last year.

Lumosty was set to return to the races in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday, but Smerdon has opted to keep the Fastnet Rock filly in Melbourne for the All Victorian Sprint Series Heat 2 at Flemington this weekend and she will have another start in Melbourne before she is sent to Queensland.

Smerdon is chasing his first win in the Tattersall’s Tiara after finishing second with Paraca in 2004 and third with Stella Maree in 2000.
