Peck could prove to be a quality staying horse for trainer Peter Snowden

There’s no doubt Peter Snowden is the king when it comes to two-year-olds and when it comes to sprinting in the open classes he’s a dominant force as well.

The one area he’d like to improve his market share though is certainly when it comes to stayers.

While he can find the odd good performer and win some good races, he’s nowhere near as dominant as he is in other areas.

He could well be on track to finding a superstar though if Peck continues to improve as he has been.

Top jockey Kerrin McEvoy is one man who has noticed his progression and in his mind the ability is there for sure.

“He’s a bit of a spruik horse but he’s still got to deliver,” McEvoy said.

“The thing against him is he doesn’t have any early speed so he has to be ridden the one way.

“A lot depends on tempo … he needs a genuinely-run race to produce his best.

“I expect Peter will base his decision on starting him once he has a good look at what is in the field.”

Peck finally rewarded loyal punters two weeks ago when he surged to victory with a good burst of speed at Rosehill Gardens.

McEvoy is keen to see the horse go further than that 2000m test and it’s expected his first start of 2400m is not too far away.

He was destined to run over the 2400m in the Queensland Derby but he could only manage to get a spot as an emergency after failing to deliver in the lead up events.

It’s very important for the Darley operation to get Peck into some quality staying events, their performances throughout this season have been ordinary to say the least.

In Sydney there have been 47 races over more than 2000m in the last 12 months, of those 47 races Snowden has managed to field a starter just twice.

To be fair that included Retrieve, an incredibly talented horse which came very close to Group 1 glory in the Australian Derby before being shipped over to England.
