Consistent mare Platelet has graduated to Group 1 company with a flashing win in the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphetville today.

Odds-on favourite Snitzerland led into the turn but was struggling at the 200m mark while Platelet produced an electric turn of foot down the centre of the track.

The four-year-old bolted clear of her rivals to easily claim the biggest win of her career as Angelic Light and Yosei ran on quickly to pick up the minor placings.

The Darren Weir-trained Platelet was at peak fitness third-up and benefited from a perfectly timed Ben Melham ride despite a tricky barrier 11 position.

“It’s a great thrill. We were a bit worried about the barrier draw earlier in the week but it as it turned out with the ride from Benny it was perfect,” Weir said.

“Three deep with a bit of cover and I think you want to be running on down the middle. It just turned out perfect.”

Weir said the daughter of Strategic could be given a chance to claim the Adelaide sprint double in the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) on May 11.

Platelet has now won six of 18 starts but has finished in the minor placings on another 10 occasions. Amazingly, the four-year-old has never finished worse than fifth.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzerland jumped a $1.60 favourite after producing big performances against quality opposition in Sydney to begin her campaign.

But the Challenge Stakes winner was labouring shortly after entering the straight and eventually finished in seventh position.
