Phelan Ready For A Win But Where & When?

At about $151 give or take a bit depending which bookmaker you use it’s fair to say Phelan Ready is an outsider in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington this Saturday.

The Queenslander faces one of the toughest fields of his life, forced to mix it with Hay List, Buffering Temple Of Boom, Lone Rock, Foxwedge as well as a little mare called Black Caviar.

If he were to win the race it’d be the boilover of the decade and bookies around the nation would sing his praises for years to come.

Realistically trainer Jason McLachlan won’t be expecting a win this weekend and he’ll be happy to walk away having seen his horse run well.

That being said he and connections must be wondering just when they are going to be able to celebrate their next win.

The five year old gelding hasn’t won a race since he was a two year old.

In fact from 26 starts he’s only managed a measly two triumphs but boy does he know how to time them.

His broke his maiden in his third start when as a $51 outsider he stormed home in the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast.

After that he ran a distant second in the Todman Slipper Trial before once again stunning punters when as a $26 chance he won the Golden Slipper, the richest two year old race in the world.

So with only two victories to his name Phelan Ready is one of the richest racehorses competing in Australia today.

To put it in perspective Phelan Ready has just under $3.5 million dollars in prize money to his credit.

Black Caviar, from her 17 straight, only has just over a million dollars more.

It’s a fascinating situation that shows just how important horse placement is for owners and trainers.

Phelan Ready has by no means been a bad horse since his last win, he’s placed eight times and run plenty of fast finishing fourths and fifths to boot.

In all likelihood he won’t be claiming win number three in the Lightning Stakes on Saturday but a good run will put him in a solid position to get it sometime this prep.

If his previous record is anything to go by it’ll come when he’s paying 50 to 1 in a million plus dollar race, you’ve been warned.
