Pateman Performs Bendigo Triple Treat

Jockey Steve Pateman won all three jumping events on Mosstrooper Steeplechase Day at Bendigo

Jockey Steve Pateman produced one of his most spectacular days of riding last Sunday when he won all three jumping events at Bendigo’s Mosstrooper Steeplechase Day.

The claimed his victories aboard three-year-old Marked Danger, as well as stablemates Capecover and Kerdem.

Pateman’s first win of the day was provided by Marked Danger, who was running in only his second ever jumps start.

“They went hard and he was keen and he had to do the chasing so he did a really good job,” Pateman said.

Pateman then partnered Kerdem to a win that saw him outsprint his rivals in the final stages of the race.

“He’s clearly a better flat horse (than his rivals),” Pateman said of Kerdem.

“He never wants to go early, he wants to lob around the back and keep his eye on things…..he covered a lot of ground, but he whipped around them easily and then was reliable over the last two (fences).

“He’s a pleasure to ride, he watches his fences and he keeps himself out of trouble.”

Stablemate Capecover rejuvenated his racing career with a victory after failing to perform as a flat racer.

Pateman feels the only obstacle the horse now needs to tackle is his tendency to race too keenly.

“He’s an exciting horse, but he’s just got to come back (underneath you) a bit,” Pateman said.

“(But) he just thrives on the jumping.”

“It’s a new lease of life for him and it may even reinvent his flat career so it’s exciting.”
