Jockey Dwayne Dunn allowed Overshare to stride forward from the barriers after jumping well and immediately took up the running; setting a fair tempo for his rivals alongside the likes of Bandipur and Tycoon Dancer.

Settling into a good tempo and enjoying a relatively carefree run in the rails, the I Am Invincible colt kicked clear upon arriving at the final straight and maintained a strong-enough sprint to beat Bandipur by just under a length.

Dwayne Dunn summed up the race perfectly and was quick to lay the praise on Overshare’s ability after winning the McKenzie Stakes.

“Today he stepped out and there was no pressure, he took a nice deep breath at the half-mile and was always going to be hard to run down,” Dunn said.

“Once I got through the first half of the race and he put his head down and relaxed for me, it gave me the opportunity to have a nice kick late, which he did have and he was solid through the line.”

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes was on hand for Overshare’s win in the McKenzie Stakes and was pleased with the colt’s performance.

“The difference between this time and last time was that he wanted get a bit keen, but that was young nerves,” Hawkes said.

“Today he couldn’t have lobbed out of the gates any quieter or more relaxed and Dwayne just gave him a peach of a ride.

Craig (Williams, Bandipur) was sitting there nice and solid coming to the corner, but when Dwayne put on a bit of pressure, Craig was in trouble, so I was quite happy at that stage.

“He’s a great sort and he has a magnificent head. He’s now Group winner and he’ll be able to go off to stud, which is what it’s all about.

“He was only beaten two-and-a-half lengths by Menari (The Rosebud) and that’s as good a form guidance as any, so that’s the Sydney form coming to Melbourne and stacking up already.”

Overshare resumed for a smart win in a Canterbury 1100m race in late June and finished a credible fourth in the Listed Rosebud (1100m), in what was his only other start prior to winning the McKenzie Stakes this time.
