Trainer Gai Waterhouse has admitted that Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) favourite Overreach is no certainty to run in the $1 million race at Rosehill on September 14.

Overreach has been considered a leading Golden Rose chance since her victory in the 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m) but Waterhouse told News Limited that the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival plans for the daughter of Exceed And Excel were up in the air and wouldn’t be decided until she makes her first barrier trial appearance next week.

“I’ll let Overreach shoot the breeze and I’ll start her when she’s ready,” Waterhouse said in The Daily Telegraph.

“I never said she was going to the Golden Rose.

“No program has been set, and we’ll just wait until she trials but she does come to hand quickly.”

Overreach had an impressive juvenile campaign and was considered unlucky by some not to win the Champion Two-Year-Old award at the New South Wales Racing Awards last week.

The classy filly began her autumn tilt with a dominant six lengths victory in the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill before returning to the same venue a month later for another effortless romp in the Group 2 Moet & Chandon Stakes (1200m).

She started the Golden Slipper as the clear favourite and justified her short price with a comfortable victory over Sidestep and Sweet Idea but her winning streak was ended a fortnight later when she was upset by Guelph in the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).

Overreach returned to trackwork at the end of July and will make her first public appearance in a barrier trial at Randwick next Monday or Warwick Farm next Friday.

If she misses the Golden Rose other potential spring targets include the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 5 and the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 16.

History is against Overreach if she competes in the Golden Rose as no horse has ever completed the Golden Slipper-Golden Rose double.
