Gai Waterhouse has added another Golden Slipper (1200m) to her impressive training resume after short-priced favourite Overreach produced a sizzling finish to claim the $3.5 million sprint at Rosehill today.

The small but talented filly showed electric gate speed from the inside barrier before jockey Tommy Berry elected to take a sit behind outside hope Kuroshio.

Overreach was untouchable in two lead-up runs and she again showed a remarkable turn of foot to quickly put a gap on her rivals in the straight.

Berry kept the daughter of Exceed And Excel to the rail rounding the bend before pulling her into the centre of the track and she galloped clear to win by two lengths from Darley-owned colt Sidestep and fellow Waterhouse-trained filly Sweet Idea.

It was the fifth Golden Slipper win for Waterhouse who is now just one off her legendary father TJ Smith.

Waterhouse was confident she had the horse to again win the world’s richest two-year-old race and praised the ride of 21-year-old Berry who scored the biggest win of his career.

“She showed her superiority,” Waterhouse said.

“Tommy was as a cool as a cucumber….we talked about the track long and hard before the race.

“He said ‘if I put her right up on the fence I think I’ve got a really good chance of getting the better ground.’ And then it was all over red rover.”

Berry hatched a plan to stick to the fence from the inside barrier after walking the track with brother Nathan prior to the race.

“Nathan convinced me. He said, ‘there’s nothing wrong with this fence round the corner,’ and I had a look and we were right,” Berry said.

An emotional Berry expressed gratefulness to Waterhouse and connections for the opportunity to ride the Slipper favourite.

“I think it’ll take a long time [to sink in]. I never thought it would happen to me, especially not this early,” Berry said.

“She [Waterhouse] puts a lot of trust in me and so do the owners. I’m so lucky to be in this position.”

It was the second consecutive Golden Slipper victory for Waterhouse after champion colt Pierro won last year on his way to the two-year-old triple crown.
