Ortensia gets her Group 1 in Winterbottom

Top sprinting mare Ortensia won her second Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot today and captured her first Group1 albeit belatedly.

The six-year-old mare won the 2009 Winterbottom Stakes when still a Group 2 event for former trainer Tony Noonan.
Later she past the post first in the 2010 Group I The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick but was disqualified after a positive swab was unearthed.

Earlier this year Ortensia was being prepared for a life at stud starting at Scone but part owner Alister Fraser had second thoughts.
He made the decision to give her another go, and sent her to Scone local Paul Messara to train.
“When we semi-retired her I just thought there was something left, one run left,” part owner Fraser said.

“Tony did a great job with her but I sent her to Paul because he has the best training facilities in New South Wales.

“I just wanted to see her win again, I wanted her to go out on top. I thought she deserved to go out a winner.”

The win brought up a double for champion jockey Craig Williams who earlier won the WA Guineas on King Saul.
He settled Ortensia behind the speed, on the back of Rarefied, who travelled to the outside of the leader Werd.

Werd kicked strongly in the straight with Rarefied chasing hard but Ortensia had the last crack at them and her customary powerful finish was seen at its best.
Ortensia defeated Rarefied with Grand Nirvana third.

“She’s always been a Group One mare in our eyes,” Williams said.
“She was awesome.

“She used the gate,  they ran a tactical race up front and I had the horse that had the great acceleration at the end.

“I’ve got such a great relationship with her.
“Only one girl I’ve got a better relationship with, that’s my wife.

“It a great thrill to get that Group One back again.”

For Messara it was a second Group I win, the other being former classy mare Alverta who won the 2010 Coolmore (1500m) at Rosehill.
