Old New Spice causes a boilover

Disregarded eight-year-old New Spice $61, turned back the clock when causing a boilover in the Tattersalls Cup (2100m) at Ascot today.

Having just his second start since January, the Elva Van Mereyk owned and trained bay, defied a wide barrier and a two year winning drought to take out the Listed event.

In his younger days, New Spice showed a lot of talent having won seven races including three Listed events by the time he had turn five.

Brian Mayfield-Smith won one of the races when Van Mereyk sent him to Melbourne in 2007.

He came back to Perth with a  severe hock injury in 2008 and it has been a struggle to get the horse to the races since.

The son of Old Spice underwent stem cell treatment when back  under the care Van Merwyk.

New Spice came back to racing in 2009 after a 30 week break and won at Ascot on Boxing Day.

More problems developed but Merwyck, who had eight starters for no winners last year, showed patience.

Today he looked like the three year old who ran a great race when fourth to Guyno in the W A Derby all those years back.

Apprentice Ryan Hill wasn’t going to die wondering when he set New Spice out quickly to sit behind tearaway leader It’s Judgement Day ($101).

Hill was happy to settle right behind that horse while the others settled another five lengths back.

The two bolters were expected to fold, and while It’s Jugdement Day did just that, New Spice, kept going.

He paid $110 on both the WA and NSW totes.

No horse threatened in the straight.

It was left to Peg’s Pride, who settled third, to finish second and Knightlike ,who came from near the tail, to gain third.

Western Jewel was the only horse to make significant ground in the straight and finished fourth.
