Odds on Streama wins Surround Stakes

Heavily backed favourite Streama has recorded a half-length victory in the Group 2 $175,000 Surround Stakes (1400m), despite some strong resistance from second-place getter Sea Siren at Warwick Farm today.

With three horses scratched due to some late week rain, only six lined up in the field for the three-year-old fillies race.

Experienced jockey Hugh Bowman had Streama set the pace out of the gate and she never got too far away from the lead.

With 500 metres to go, the Guy Walter trained horse lifted but Sea Siren pushed hard down the outside to challenge the $1.50 favourite all the way to the line.

Walter said he was not surprised by the way the filly responded to Bowman pushing her hard at the start.

“She really lengthened when Hughey [Bowman] asked her,” he said.

“He [Bowman] said before the race that he didn’t really want to be dictated to.

“I’ve always said she is a very, very adaptable filly and Hughey has made that point to me.”

Streama now has an impressive five victories from 10 career starts and Walter believes there are plenty more wins to come.

“She has a great will to win,” he said.

Sea Siren produced a stellar effort coming off a Light Fingers Stakes victory and showed she is a filly of great potential.

Hallowelle Belle was the eventual third-place finisher.
