Oaks Win Confirms Scarlett Lady’s Cup Hopes

Scarlett Lady goes two in a row in Australia and extends her winning streak to five with a monster of a run to claim the Queensland Oaks down the extreme outside.

She settled a lot further back than her previous run at Doomben and it looked to be risky when she was covered up with not a lot of early speed on.

That changed mid race though when there was a battle for the lead and the pace increased dramatically giving the horses further back every chance.

Divorces was also ridden well back, in fact she was near enough last on the turn hugging the inside rail.

The surprise of the race was probably Becerra which settled fourth and when they turned for home shot away form the pack and built up a solid margin.

Once again though James McDonald road the kiwi filly beautiful and the patience he showed has become a real trait of his riding.

He had to go around the entire field to get there but as soon as she was in the clear the race was never in doubt and she rolled past Becerra and scored a big win.

Shez Sinsational didn’t disappoint either and after battling for a run she ran home hard to grab third place behind Beccera.

Divorces took the short cut and did end up with a run but had too much to do only coming home in fourth spot.

There is real excitement building on both sides of the Tasman  about Scarlett Lady and it’s a real balancing act for the connections to pan the future.

For trainer Graeme Rogerson though he’s just enjoying the moment.

“To get his first Group 1 win is just amazing,” he said.

He couldn’t praise the performance of McDonald enough.

“It was a 10 out of 10 ride, just fantastic,” he said.

“His intention was always to ride her quiet, he knows she’s got  a massive turn of foot and he rode her to perfection.”

The next question is will she run in the Queensland Derby but that’s a big query given what the future could have in store.

“We’ll see in the next few days if she runs in the Derby,” Rogerson said.

“There might be bigger plans with her in the spring.”

Those bigger plans could involve a Caulfield Cup and ultimately the Melbourne Cup has become a genuine consideration.

The only thing that’s certain is wherever she goes McDonald will be the man on her after another immaculate ride.

“She’s very small but got a big heart, she just takes me to places I don’t usually go,” he said.

“We got well back in the running but I wasn’t too worried as there’s a lot of speed on.’

Scarlett Lady is on track to replicating the efforts of arguably New Zealand’s best horse of the modern era in Ethereal.

She won both The Roses and the Queensland Oaks in 2011 and in the same year went to Melbourne to win the Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup double.

After today’s run it’s almost certainly a route Scarlett lady will be taking and one she has the ability to win.
