Oaks Prospects Bleak For Song And Roses

Trainer Kevin Moses is considering not accepting for the Group 1 Queensland Oaks final field after learning that his filly, Song And Roses, is 43rd in the order of entry.

Song And Roses is due to compete at Canterbury today, however, a win isn’t likely to increase her ballot number enough to guarantee her of a start in the $400,000 Oaks on June 4.

“I was hoping to take her up for the Oaks but even if she wins tomorrow I think she would be a long way down (the order of entry),” Moses said.

“Looking at it, there looks like there’s going to be plenty of runners in it this year.”

Moses is reluctant to pay the acceptance fee, as well as transport the filly up to Queensland, when he is not assured of a start.

“I don’t think we’ll bother going there yet because (today) is the (first) acceptances and I’ve got to pay $660,” Moses said.

“Then you’ve got to spend the money to get her up there and she might still not get a run.”

The trainer will make one last call before acceptances are released in the hope that there is a smaller than expected field.

“I’d nearly say it’s out unless I ring up in the morning and there’s only 15 runners still in there for the Oaks,” Moses said.
