Oakleigh Girl to jump out before heading to Melbourne

Smart filly Oakleigh Girl will have a jump out at Doomben on Tuesday morning before flying to Melbourne to prepare for the Group 1 $400,000 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28.

Eagle Farm trainer Danny Bougoure said that Oakleigh Girl has recovered from a stone bruise that saw her miss the Magic Millions Carnival at the Gold Coast at the beginning of January and is back on track for a Melbourne Autumn Carnival campaign.

“She missed about ten days work so I decided to ease up and set her for the Melbourne carnival,” Bougoure told AAP.

“She has won in Melbourne and things are going OK so far.”

“We probably could have got her back to the Magic Millions, but instead of doing that we thought we would give her a couple of weeks in the paddock and really get her right for Melbourne.”

If Oakleigh Girl was to win the Oakleigh Plate around the tricky Caulfield track, she would emulate both her sire and dam with Snitzel winning the Group 1 sprint in 2006 and her dam Miss Kournikova taking the trophy in 2001.

The speedy filly made quite an impression as a two year old when Bougoure produced her first up to score a debut win down the Flemington straight in the Group 3 $120,000 7News Stakes (1000m) during the 2013 Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The Snitzel filly then returned to Brisbane to lead all of the way in winning the Listed $100,000 Channel Seven Calaway Gal Stakes (1010m) at Doomben before running fourth to Unencumbered in the Group 3 $150,000 McGrath Estate Agents B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Doomben in late December.

She then ran a gallant second to Unencumbered again in the 2014 Jeep $2m Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast during the Magic Millions January Carnival.

Oakleigh Girl was then unplaced at two runs during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival and has been off the scene since finishing fifth to Eloping in the Group 3 $500,000 Girvan Waugh Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on the second day of ‘The Championships’.

Oakleigh Girl, a $400,000 Magic Millions yearling purchase in 2013, has earned $503,500 for her connections from two wins and a second from only six race starts.
