It was already considered unlikely but Black Caviar trainer Peter Moody confirmed this morning the champion mare will not contest the Newmarket Handicap.

The six-year-old will next be seen in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) under lights at Moonee Valley on Friday, March 22.

Black Caviar won the 2011 Newmarket carrying 58kg and Moody, along with connections, decided it was unnecessary to again test her under handicap conditions where she was expected to be allocated 61.5kg.

“I spoke to the owners last night and we decided the William Reid was the best race for her,” Moody told TVN.

“We decided to make the decision earlier so everyone knew what we were doing.”

The undisputed world’s best sprinter has pulled up well from her stunning first-up win in the Black Caviar Lightning on Saturday, with vets giving her the all-clear to press on for a 24th straight victory.

It will be the queen of the turf’s second outing in the William Reid Stakes after winning in 2011 in typically convincing style.

Despite the tight-turning Moonee Valley track often being tough to handle, it has been just like any other venue for the all-conquering mare.

Six of Black Caviar’s remarkable 24 undefeated starts have come at Moonee Vallery and her record-breaking form on Saturday suggests that will be seven from 25 come March 22.

Thirty five horses were entered yesterday for the William Reid Stakes including Black Caviar’s stablemate and Lightning runner-up Moment Of Change.

Also nominated are undefeated Perth star Barakey and triple Group 1 winner Sea Siren.
