No Doncaster for Skyerush Despite Prelude Win

Guy Walter will resist the urge to throw Skyerush into next Saturday’s $1.5 million Doncaster Mile despite a strong win in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1600m) at Randwick today.

The seven-year-old will instead defend her title in the Emancipation Stakes in two weeks after fighting all the way to the line to defeat Alma’s Fury and Illo.

Jockey Blake Shinn combined with Walter earlier in the day to score a convincing Carbine Club Stakes win on Toydini and he produced another excellent ride aboard the experienced mare.

Shinn positioned the daughter of Super Jet just behind the speed before pulling her out in the straight where she quickly over took the leaders.

From there it was up to the horse and she fought gamely to hold off the always tough Alma’s Fury.

Walter described Skyerush as a “lovely mare” and was impressed by her ability to carry 58kg to victory in good company.

“I thought she had a tough task but she’s a great little mare. She loves to win, she toughed it out really well,” Walter said.

“She’ll be back here for the Emancipation. That’s always been her aim.

“She’s going to be very hard to beat, she won the race last year and I think she can do it again.”

Shinn is in good form as a rider and was thrilled to chalk up his second win of the day for Walter.

“The second horse, Alma’s Fury, I’ve ridden him in his past couple of starts, he’s a pretty hard horse to get past,” Shinn said.

“It’s great to win on her, she’s such an honest mare. It’s fantastic for connections and it’s great for Guy Walter.”
