Super Irish trainer Willie Mullins dreams of winning the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday with his tough stayer Max Dynamite.
Mullins is quite content with the way that Max Dynamite has settled into his new surroundings at the Werribee Quarantine Centre and said he is ready to run a mighty race on Tuesday.
“I have been very happy with how the horse has settled in, how he trained,” Mullins said.
“I missed him doing a breeze-up this morning (Saturday), coming in off the flight, baggage didn’t come out in time, these things happen but he appeared great after it and fingers crossed. We’re looking forward to Tuesday.”
Mullins said that it has always been his dream to come to Australia and try to win the Melbourne Cup after fellow Irish trainer Dermot Weld took the trophy back to Ireland after Vintage Crop created history with his win in 1993.
“It was fantastic to see Dermot Weld win it that time,” Mullins said.
“It’s a mega race.
“It’s possibly the biggest race in the world at the moment and it would be everything to win it.
And like Vintage Crop, Max Dynamite has had success of the hurdles back home in Ireland with his last try of the jumps only two runs back when he finished second in the €300,000 Guinness Galway Hurdle Handicap at Galway on July 30 this year.
Max Dynamite began his career in France before being transferred to Mullins’ Irish stable where he was tested over the jumps with one win from seven attempts, claiming victory at his first try over the obstacles in a two mile Maiden Hurdle at Thurles in Ireland in November 2014.
Max Dynamite’s latest win at York in the Group 2 £160,000 Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Lonsdale Cup (2 mile, 88 yards) on August 21 has seen him well in commission in the market order for the Melbourne Cup with Ladbrokes.com.au listing him as a $14 chance alongside of Cox Plate runner up Criterion.
“Lots of things have gone right for us and the form is working out,” Mullins said.
“His previous run on the flat was in the Northumberland Plate. He came from a really wide draw to be a good second so I thought that could win us a Lonsdale Cup but what we didn’t expect was how well he won it.
“That was our ticket to come across here.
“You have to get a clear run, you need clear running but the Gods are smiling on us so far.”
