The $350,000 W A Guineas (1600m) went the way King Saul and jockey Craig Williams – who else – at Ascot today.
Continuing on from his splendid Melbourne Racing Spring Carnival when winning the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate among other key races, Williams produced another perfect ride to give the Trevor Andrews trained gelding a Group 2 victory at  just his fourth start.

All week King Saul was friendless with punters but Williams stuck thick with the son of Flying Pegasus.

King Saul, was as short as $3.40 but drifted to officially start $4.40 and paid even better on the totes.

Despite the apparent pattern of the day, to be close to the lead, Williams was happy to settle King Saul second last early.
The Pat Carberry ridden Single Spice led race favourite Ron’s Call with Almachino on that horse’s outside.
Sydney based hoop Kerrin McEvoy had no luck on Independent Mak being three wide without over.
At the 800m, Williams had King Saul in the running line but was still 10 lengths from the leader.
He was wide at the home turn but waited for King Saul to balance before asking him for an effort.
At the 300m Almachino sprinted and opened up a three length break, it momentarily looked a winning break.

But she tired visible just before the 100m with Williams late on the scene taking the big prize.
Ron’s Call ($1.80 fav) was perfectly ridden but had given up at the top of the straight.

Both Caiguna and Red Hot Sax had settled back in the field but were in front of King Saul as the field straightened.

That duo ran on to fill the placing but were clearly outsprinted.
Outsider Ningaloo Blitz has a troubled passage in the straight and with more luck could have snatched second.
