The 2015 Crown Oaks track is expected to be downgraded in the lead-up to the Group 1 event at Flemington this afternoon and trainer John Thompson believes that the wet state of the track will be perfect for his runner Honesta.
Honesta made her racing debut with a poor effort at Doomben in October of 2011, but she has improved significantly as a three-year-old and she has been only narrowly denied a maiden win at Group level in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on September 19, the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at the same venue on October 3 and the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 17.
The Monaco Consul filly performed well in her only previous race starts on a soft track Thompson told Racing Ahead that the three-year-old is bred to absolutely love the wet and he hopes that the track will be as wet as possible before the Crown Oaks.
“She has continued to thrive while she has been down in Melbourne and it is a credit to the horse – she is a tough one,” Thompson said.
“He was a swimmer and he won the Spring Champion and the Derby in Melbourne on a bog.
“I think she will definitely handle it and the more rain the better for us.”
Honesta has shown a degree of tactical versatility during her racing career to date and she he was ridden right on the speed in the Ethereal Stakes, but Thompson confirmed that she would be ridden quietly in the 2015 Crown Oaks.
Thompson said that Honesta never looked comfortable at Caulfield in the Ethereal Stakes, but he believes that she will be much better suited to the long straight and sweeping bend at Flemington.
“He will ride her quite,” Thompson said.
“I don’t think going forward last start helped us at all.
“She ran around Caulfield like a drunken sailor and getting to Flemington on the bigger track with the more swooping turns – you saw the difference it made with Ambience and hopefully it is the same with us.
“I am sure that she will run another terrific race.”
Honesta is currently available at 2015 Crown Oaks odds of $11 with Ladbrokes, while Jameka ($4) is a narrow favourite from Ambience ($4.20), Sacred Eye ($4.40) and Pasadena Girl ($6.50).
