Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller is eyeing off back to Sydney Cups with today’s Chairman’s Quality winner Permit.

Permit has cemented himself at the top of Sydney Cup betting with a decisive win in the 2600m Group 2 lead up to the Group 1 $500,000 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick in two weeks.

Waller in sending Permit into the Cup this year with better credentials than last year’s winner Stand To Gain who started at $20 after an ordinary run in the Chairman’s.

Corey Brown was able to find the fence from a wide alley in the early part of the race and gave Permit a nice quiet run in the middles stages before bringing him to the outside to score a convincing win.

Waller gave Brown a pat on the back for a very good ride and is mindful that Permit will be going into the Sydney Cup with a perfect preparation.

“From an awkward barrier he had him in very good position, a lot closer than I thought he would have been,” Waller said.

“I put a lot of pressure on my jockeys and I don’t think that helps in big races, they can often ride too much to instructions . To Corey’s credit he’s backed himself and got him a lot closer than I thought he would have beeen and got a gem of a run,” he said.

“It’s good to have winning form going into big races.”

Permit was always short in the betting and was sent out the $2.40 favourite with runner up Older Than Time at $6.50.
