Two Blue has posted a big upset in the final race at Royal Randwick on Day 2 of The Championships; leading from start to finish to take out the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m).
Two Blue was rated virtually no chance of success in the 2016 Sapphire Stakes but gave her chances a huge boost when jumping well and immediately taking up the pace.
Setting only a fair tempo and experiencing a great run in transit, the Dubleo mare was offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight and immediately kicked clear; charging home to hit the line close to two lengths in the clear of Secret Agenda and Brook Road.
Trainer Kristen Buchanan saddled her first ever Group winner in Two Blue this afternoon and was understandably thrilled with the result.
“She’s been an amazing mare and it’s just so great to see it all come off,” Buchanan said.
“Paul (King) just rode her an absolute treat then and I just can’t describe it.
“She’s absolutely fabulous, she’s just so tenacious, she’s rising eight this year and just loves being a racehorse.
“Paul’s been such a huge boost to my stable, his advice and feedback on my horses.”
King delivered a smart ride aboard Two Blue to win the Sapphire Stakes and was quick to praise Buchanan’s training efforts as well as the quality of the horse in the success.
“She’s just an honest, trying mare,” King said.
“I know she’s rising eight, but big credit goes to Kristen Buchanan and the team back at the stables.
“She was unlucky last preparation, she ran a lot of seconds to some good horses but I said to Kristen this time around I thought she’d improved, and it was proven today in winning a Group 2.
“It’s easy when you’re on a good horse. You could put an ordinary horse in the right spot but it’s the end that helps and if the horse has got the ability, they’ll do the job for you.”
Two Blue has won eight of her 38 career starts since first appearing on course competitively in 2012.
