Paying $31, the four-year-old defeated a host of more experienced runners including top Sydney Cup fancies Julienas and Hathras.

There was speculation earlier in the day the inside ground was suspect but that was put to bed as Craig Newitt kept his mount to the rail.

After Julienas and Hathras battled for the lead for the majority of the staying trip, the Patinack-owned gelding emerged in the final 200m to defeat the fast-finishing Blood Brother and Aliyana Tilde.

It was the second consecutive win for the son of Zabeel who claimed his first black-type success in the Randwick City Stakes last month.

Trainer John Thompson was pleased there were no signs of the barrier problems his charge has faced in the past and confirmed he will next run in the Sydney Cup in two weeks time.

“The team has done a great job with this horse,” Thompson said.

“Everybody knows he’s had his barrier problems but they’ve got the job done. Full credit to the horse.

“I think he’s a very promising stayer. He’ll be there [in the Sydney Cup].”

Newitt was aboard for the first time today and gave Tremec a glowing endorsement heading towards the Sydney Cup.

“He’d have gone another lap if I asked him to. He’s very casual in the run,” Newitt said.

“His biggest hurdle is the barriers but today he was on his best behaviour and he got the job done well.”
