Trainer Tony Gollan has confirmed that tough filly Tornado Miss will set the pace in the 2014 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm on June 7.
Tornado Miss has taken up the running when fourth in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 3 and third in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on May 17 and Gollan told Racing Ahead this morning that he will be instructing Craig Newitt to take Tornado Miss to the lead when she jumps from barrier two in the Queensland Oaks this weekend.
“She will roll to the front,” Gollan said.
“She tends to enjoy racing that way, where she gets out and lead and dictate the tempo, and we won’t change too much on Saturday.
“She is a very tough filly and I think we saw that in The Roses; I know that it was an on-pace bias, but she certainly set a good tempo all the way and it was the horses that came off the pace that beat her.
“She is a good tough filly and she will be there to set the speed and hopefully run out a strong 2400 metres.”
Tornado Miss will be stepping up to 2400 metres for the first time in her racing career, but Gollan is confident that the daughter of Snitzel will run out the trip strongly.
The three-year-old has improved her performance each time that she has stepped up in trip and Gollan said that he was happy with the tough front-running effort of the filly behind Arabian Gold and Tinto in The Roses.
“She is racing like it won’t be a problem, but whether of these genuinely want it I’m not that sure,” Gollan said.
“She has come out of The Roses terrific, better than what she went into it, and her work on Tuesday was terrific.
“She is a fit, healthy filly and she deserves her chance at this race.
“I am sure that she will run a big race, she continues to train on through the prep and the more that she races up in distance the better that she is doing around the stable.”
Tornado Miss is currently available at 2014 Queensland Oaks odds of $31; with Arabian Gold ($2.50) a clear favourite from Tinto ($7.50), the well-backed Khutulun ($8) and Rock Diva ($11).
