Iron Boss might be a $41 outsider in the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m), but Tommy Berry is determined to be fit to ride the Mark Kavanagh trained colt at Flemington on Saturday.
Berry suffered neck and shoulder injuries when his mount Kasiano Lad broke down and collapsed in the straight at Randwick last Saturday and went to hospital to get checked over.
The top Sydney jockey declared himself fit to take four rides at Canterbury on Wednesday but is still undergoing intense treatment to be fit to complete his engagements at Flemington on the weekend.
“It’s still quite sore but I don’t feel it much when I’m riding, I only feel it a bit on pulling up,” Berry told AAP.
“I’m looking forward to Saturday, I’ve got a nice book of rides.”
The lightly raced Iron Boss has only been to the races on five occasions with a win at his third race start in a 1540m Geelong Maiden on September 17.
Kavanagh then stepped the Street Cry colt up to Stakes company and he ran a creditable fifth to Victoria Derby rival Ayers Rock in the Listed $120,000 UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on October 4 but then only managed to beat one runner home when tenth to Sacred Eye in the Group 3 $500,000 Ladbrokes Caulfield Classic (2000m) at Caulfield on October 17.
Berry is looking for another Melbourne Spring Carnival Group 1 win after partnering the Team Hawkes trained Chautauqua to victory in the Group 1 $1m Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night.
Berry’s other Group 1 rides on Victoria Derby Day are Ecuador in the $1m Longines Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) and Slightly Sweet in the $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m).
The Gai Waterhouse trained Ecuador comes to Flemington on the back of a career best second to Winx in the Group 1 $1m The Star 150th Epsom (1600m) at Randwick on October 3 but is listed as a $26 chance with Ladbrokes.com.au.
