2013 Melbourne Cup Field Expert Comments

1.       Dunaden

“Dunaden is a quality stayer but no horse in the last thirty years has carried more than 58 kilos to victory.”

2.       Green Moon

“I’m not sure that Green Moon is good enough to join Archer, Rain Lover, Think Big and Makybe Diva as back-to-back winners of the Melbourne Cup.”

3.       Red Cadeaux

“Red Cadeaux may be eight-years-old but he has performed well in the Hong Kong Vase, The Dubai World Cup and the Tenno Sho in Japan.”

4.       Sea Moon

“Sea Moon hasn’t run at his best in Australia but he destroyed Dunaden, Fiorente and Red Cadeaux in the Hardwicke Stakes at the 2012 Royal Ascot meeting.”

5.       Brown Panther

“Brown Panther has been one of the most consistent stayers in England in the past two years but is still chasing his first victory at Group 1 level after he finished second behind Masked Marvel in the Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes.”

6.        Fiorente

Fiorente is a deserving Melbourne Cup betting favourite but no horse has won the race after finishing second the year before since Empire Rose in 1988.”

7.       Foreteller

“Foreteller’s original 2013 Spring Racing Carnival target was the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes on Victoria Derby Day but trainer Chris Waller decided to give him a chance in the Melbourne Cup after his fourth place finish in the Cox Plate.”

8.       Dandino

“Dandino did not incredibly impressing when he flew home to finish second in the Caulfield Cup but I’m just not sure that he will run a strong 3200 metres.”

9.       Ethiopia

“I really don’t know why they bothered including Ethiopia in the 2013 Melbourne Cup field; he hasn’t won a race since his 2012 Australian Derby victory and he was very poor in the Caulfield Cup.”

10.   Fawkner

“Owner Lloyd Williams thinks that Fawkner is an excellent chance to become the first horse since Ethereal in 2001 to complete the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double.”

11.   Mourayan

“Mourayan looks like he is past his best but he did finish eighth in the Melbourne Cup last year and he won the Sydney Cup in the autumn.”

12.   Seville

“The form coming out of The Metropolitan  hasn’t been great but Seville will stay the trip and is a good chance to give owner Lloyd Williams his fifth ever Melbourne Cup victory.”

13.   Super Cool

“Super Cool hasn’t performed at his best this campaign but he won the Australia Cup and finished second at the Victoria Derby at this track as a three-year-old.”

14.   Masked Marvel

“Masked Marvel is still chasing his first win in Australia but has improved at each of his starts this preparation and defeated Brown Panther, Sea Moon and Seville to win the 2011 Ladbrokes St Leger over 2900 metres.”

15.   Mount Athos

“Mount Athos’ trainer Luca Cumani finished second in the Melbourne Cup with Purple Moon and Bauer but still hasn’t won our famous race.”

16.   Royal Empire

“Royal Empire is the most talented horse that Godolphin have ever brought to Australia for the Melbourne Cup and he beat Red Cadeaux to win the Geoffrey Freer Stakes.”

17.   Voleuse De Coeurs

“Voleuse De Coeurs used to be trained by leading Irish trainer Dermot Weld but he has now joined the stable of Australian trainer Mike Moroney who won the 2000 Melbourne Cup with Brew.”

18.   Hawkspur

“Hawkspur was unlucky in the Caulfield Cup but no Queensland Derby winner has ever gone on and won the Melbourne Cup.”

19.   Simenon

“Simenon used to race over hurdles and looked too dour for the Melbourne Cup but he ran well in the Herbert Power Stakes last month.”

20.   Ibicenco

“Ibicenco won the Geelong Cup and two of the last three winners of that race have gone on to win the Melbourne Cup.”

21.   Verema

“Verema won the Prix Kergorlay in France before coming to Australia, which is the same race that Americain and Dunaden both ran in before winning the Melbourne Cup.”

22.   Dear Demi

“Dear Demi has had an ideal preparation for the Melbourne Cup and owner John Singleton is so confident that she will win that he has backed her to win $3 million.”

23.   Tres Blue

“Tres Blue has only just joined the Gai Waterhouse stable, just like Fiorente did before he ran second in last year’s Melbourne Cup.”

24.   Ruscello

“Ruscello won the Lexus Stakes well on Saturday but surely it is too much of an ask to expect the horse to win again after only a three day break.”
