Super One is set to contest the 2015 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Saturday and trainer Michael Freedman is hopeful that his star colt can return to winning form following his shock defeat first-up.

Super One started his racing career with four wins from as many starts in Singapore and he opened as a dominant favourite ahead of his Australian racing debut in the Apache Cat Classic (1000m) at Cranbourne on October 11, but he was an alarming drifter late and he was unable to get past General Jackson in the final stages of the race.

Freedman admits that he was initially disappointed with the performance of Super One in the Apache Cat Classic, but he now feels that there were factors against the three-year-old and he is confident that the son of I Am Invincible will produce a much improved performance in the 2015 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

“He seems really good,” Freedman told Radio TAB.

“Looking back on his run three weeks ago at Cranbourne he was probably reasonably underdone with some interruptions in both Singapore and Werribee.

“I think that he has made some good improvement since then and obviously going into a race like Saturday he will have to have made some improvement, but to my eye he has.

“I was disappointed initially, but with the benefit of some hindsight I’ve started to feel a fair bit better about it.

“The fact that a few of those horses around him at Cranbourne have come out and run well since at Moonee Valley, so I am feeling a lot better about things now.”

Super One led from start to finish in all four of his race starts in Singapore and there was speculation that the colt would be ridden for speed with blinkers on in the 2015 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Freedman confirmed that Super One will not wear blinkers in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and he believes that his star galloper does not have to take up the running in the early stages of the stallion-making race.

“I think we will just have a look at things,” Freedman said.

“Hughie and I will have a good chat about the race before Saturday, but I don’t think he has to lead.

“Where he is drawn in barrier ten of 12 runners, it gives Hugh (Bowman) options about where to ride him.

“We experimented with blinkers last week and he certainly worked well in them, but he trialed up the straight without them and we both agreed after that that he probably didn’t need them.

“It may have helped just to switch him on a little bit, but he trialed sharply enough last week without them to not need them in the race.”

Super One is currently available at 2015 Coolmore Stud Stakes odds of $26 with Ladbrokes, while Exosphere ($1.45) is a dominant favourite from Keen Array ($11), Mogador ($11), Counterattack ($16) and Hellbent ($18).
