Mighty mare Streama scored her fourth Group 1 win by taking out the 2014 $500,000 Titan Energy Services Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben today.
Given the run of the race, third on the fence, by in form jockey Blake Shinn, Streama was able to get past the leader Leebaz in front of the roaring Doomben crowd.
Winning trainer Guy Walter has hinted that Streama could be heading to the breeding barn at the end of the season but wouldn’t confirm if we will see the five year old mare on the racetrack again.
“I couldn’t pre-empt the owners,” Walter said.
“She has been a wonderful mare. She won the Keith Mackay as a two year old and here she is rising six, her fourth Group 1 win.”
“She’s won black type races from 1200m to a mile and a half, a wonderful mare, never had an unsound day.”
“It must be close to the end of her career. She is a rising six year old mare. This is certainly a crowning moment in her career.”
Streama was coming off a win in the Group 2 $358,000 Wimmers Soft Drinks A. D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 3 and was sent out the $4.20 equal favourite with third placegetter Junoob from the Chris Waller stable.
Leebaz ($7) from the Team Hawkes stable tried to lead all of the way and fought on well in the straight to hold on for second, three quarters of a length away.
Shinn continues to show the racing world his ability and wrapped up a winning treble for the day on Streama after winning earlier on Tales Of Fashion in the Listed $100,000 Gallopers Sports Club Lancaster Stakes (1200m) and on Arabian Gold in the previous race, the Group 2 $175,000 XXXX Gold The Roses (2000m).
Today’s win was Shinn’s second Group 1 victory on Streama after the pair took out the Group 1 $350,000 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last September.
Streama’s other two Group 1 wins were the $400,000 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in the Spring of 2011 and the 2012 $550,000 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick.
Today’s win has boosted Streama’s prizemoney earnings to over $2.6 million.
