The Chris Waller trained Strawberry Boy kept the punters happy with an all the way win in the Group 3 $125,000 Programmed Property Services Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) at Doomben today.
Winning jockey Zac Purton gave Strawberry Boy followers no cause for concern at any stage of the race and after are crossing from a wide barrier heading into the first turn, set the tempo and skipped away in the straight to record a comfortable three lengths win over the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Lucky Lago ($9)
The winner’s stablemate I’m Imposing ($4.40) was given a sweet run by Tye Angland just behind the leading division and made up some ground in the straight to finish third, but was no match for the first two.
Strawberry Boy was having is third run back from a break and was heavily supported to start the $4 favourite, firming in from $5.
The Redoute’s Choice six year old adopted similar tactics first up when beaten less than a length when fifth to Rugged Cross over 1400m at Randwick on April 18 then set the pace again when sixth to Tales Of Grimm in the Listed $200,000 Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m) at Scone on May 15.
His last run in the Scone Cup topped him nicely for today’s run and he duly saluted.
Lucky Lago was also coming off a run in the Scone Cup when fifth and today’s effort was an indication that a win in the future is not far away.
I’m Imposing has been racing consistently and made it three placings in a row after finishing third to Leebaz in the Group 2 $358,000 Sky Thoroughbred Central A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast on April 25 and third again in the Group 1 $650,000 The Bundaberg Rum Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben on May 9.
