A quiet ride by Nick Hall saw Spirit Of Boom ($7) come from well back in the field to score by three quarters of a length over the consistent Shamal Wind ($6.50) and the Peter Moody trained Ready To Rip ($10) in a very tight finish.

Favourite Chiaramonte ($3.90) never saw daylight in the straight to finish seventh and the four year old’s run should be forgotten.

Trainer Tony Gollan was finally relieved to win a race in Melbourne with Spirit Of Boom who has been knocking in the door and showed that he wasn’t far off the winner’s circle with a second to Platelet in the Group 2 $220,000 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight on October 5.

“We’ve been knocking our heads down here for quite a few seasons now, it’s really rewarding today, I’m so stoked he won,” Gollan said.

“He has run so many good races down here. This just looked a really good race for him, good alley. Nick just rode him perfectly, settled back and unleashed him on the corner and he was just too good.”

“The quieter you ride him the better he finishes it off. With cover today he just settled beautiful, something he didn’t do up the straight.”

Gollan will now go back to Flemington for the Group 2 $300,000 Yellowglen Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day in two weeks then head to Perth for the Summer Carnival.

The win od Spirit Of Boom continued the good run that Queensland trained horses are having over the Melbourne Spring Carnival with fellow Eagle Farm trainer Liam Birchley winning earlier in the day with Liesele taking out the Listed $120,000 Carlton Dreaught Alinghi Stakes (1100m).
