Peter Snowden starts Melbourne Cup Day with a win in the first with Applegate

The Peter Snowden stable’s wow of a time at Flemington Spring Carnival continued when two-year-old Applegatewon the opening race on Cup day – the Emirates Airlines (2YO) 1000m.

Having its first start the well-developed daughter of Exceed and Excel may have only scored narrowly but bigger plans lay ahead.

Snowden had a winning double on the opening day of the carnival Saturday with Galah and Sepoy as well as two seconds with Injuna and Rarified.

Applegate, who drew gate 17, was held together by jockey Kerrin McEvoy  settling just off the pace in a field littered with mainly first starters.

At the 200m Snitzerland, a Gerald Ryan trained first starter, pinched a break but was caught by the bigger filly on the line.

Alezan Thunder who showed good pace, drifted to the fence near the finish and did well to hang onto third.

Snowden is going to spell Applegate with the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in the autumn the main aim.

Snowden won the race with Sepoy this year.

He praised McEvoy for a patient ride on the tractable filly.

McEvoy made it a winner on Melbourne Cup day for the six year running.

He rides Modun on today’s Cup while Snowden hasn’t got a runner in the big race.

However Snowden did have a tip – he picked At First Sight ahead of Americain
