Ambidexter is one of two Peter Snowden horses in the Spring Stakes

Peter Snowden is the only trainer with dual acceptors in today’s Spring Stakes and in such a small competitive field the two runners could prove invaluable.

His headline act is Ambidexter, a colt on a two race winning streak with plenty of upside about him ahead of today’s race.

He debuted back in July with a second across 1000m at Kembla Grange before heading to Rosehill at the end of the month and struggling over 1300m in good company.

Since then though things have turned around rapidly starting with a 1400m triumph at Warwick Farm across a heavy surface.

He proved his versatility at his next start with a win across the same journey on a good rated surface on September 3rd.

Today it’s the Spring Stakes, his first go at the mile and one with a good group of horses.

“It’s a very small but very select field and there’s some nice horses there,” Snowden said.

He says although the horse has settled towards the back of the pack in his recent wins he’s far from a one trick pony.

“He won’t be far away (from the pace), he only got back the last two starts because of a bad gate but form (barrier) three he won’t be far away at all,” he said.

He says the horse has continued to improve from his last run and he expects his blistering form to continue.

“He’s progressed very well, he’s taking giant steps quickly,” he said.

“I’ve always had a good opinion of him and he’s doing exactly what I thought he’d do.”

Darley’s other rep Trapunto is less fancied in the markets but also comes off a last start win.

He won over 1550m at Canterbury so the fact he’s proved he’ll handle the trip is a big plus.

“I like this horse…he’s Pinwheel’s half brother,” Snowden said.

“He works very strongly on the track but he’s still got to learn a lot about racing.

“As long as he settles well, he does have a tendency to get a bit keen.”
