Smarty Mac opened at odds of $5 in 2014 Darwin Cup betting markets on Saturday, but has received plenty of support in the last 24 hours and is now into a quote of $4 to win the Northern Territory’s feature race.

Smarty Mac started his winter preparation under the care of leading Melbourne trainer Darren Weir and he performed fairly in three benchmark 78 events at Sandown, Bendigo and Geelong before joining the stable of Dick Leech in Darwin.

The Akhadan gelding scored a narrow victory over Cantonese in the Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) at Fannie Bay on July 12 to stamp himself as a leading contender for the Darwin Cup and he lugged 59 kilograms to a second place finish behind The Ruffian in the Buntine Handicap (1900m) a week later.

Another galloper that has received support in 2014 Darwin Cup betting markets is talented gelding Gravitational, who is into a quote of $9 after being available at $12 less than 24 hours ago.

Gravitational was previously prepared by Danny O’Brien and finished in the placings in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) at Morphettville on April 26 before struggling to run out the trip when tenth in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at the same venue on May 3.

The Astronomer Royal gelding joined the stable of Gary Clarke before he finished second in the PSC Insurance Brookers Handicap (1300m) at Fannie Bay on June 21 and scored a narrow win over Royal Request in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) before his Darwin Cup rival turned-the-tables in the Darwin Derby (2000m) on July 19.

Experienced stayer Lightinthenite opened as a narrow favourite in the 2014 Darwin Cup betting market at Ladbrokes Australia, but he has drifted significantly since Friday and is now out to a quote of $7.50.

Lightinthenite finished third in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, but he was unable to replicate that form during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival; with the Galileo gelding sent to the spelling paddock after beating home just a single runner in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22.

The seven-year-old made his Darwin racing debut when he carried 62 kilograms to a fourth place finish in the Chief Minister’s Cup and will carry 60 kilograms in the Darwin Cup this afternoon.

Cantonese ($5.50) is the on the second line of Darwin Cup betting markets, while there has also been a sprinkling of support for The Ruffian ($8.50), Differing Fortunes ($17) and Royal Request ($8).
