Portelli will give Sebring Sun a short freshen up before preparing him for the $2m Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 9.

Sebring Sun ran a mighty race when third to Exosphere in the Group 1 $1m De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 12 but the failed to fire when tenth of twelve in the Group 1 $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 31.

“While the track didn’t play into his favour, he didn’t fire anyway,” Portelli told’s Racing Ahead on RSN.

“We put him out for a break straight away.

“The plan was hopefully he’d run well there, and then freshen up and go to the Magic Millions – there’s a three-year-old race there over 1400m worth $1.2 million to the winner.

“We couldn’t leave that on the table, we’re going to aim at that. He’ll have one run before the Magic Millions.

“Hopefully last preparation hasn’t taken any out of him – he certainly doesn’t look like he’s come back dour, he’s quite well.

“It’s a fantastic race to aim at, the prizemoney – you just can’t turn your back on it.”

Magic Millions has continued its association with Jeep and has programmed a $10 million race day at the Gold Coast on January 9 and has become the world’s richest sales related race day.

Portelli has always held a high opinion of Sebring Sun and as a two year old tried to qualify him for the Group 1 $3.5m Tooheys New Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill during the Sydney Carnival.

The Sebring colt’s run in the Listed $125,000 DX Solutions Lonhro Plate (1100m) at Randwick on February 14 when fifth gave Portelli some hope of running in the world’s richest two year old race but then he failed to qualify when fifth to Exosphere Group 2 $175,000 Pro-Ride Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm two weeks later.

Sebring Sun then returned in the Spring to win a maiden at Canterbury before taking out the Listed $100,000 The Rosebud (1200m) at Randwick on August 8 and then ran third to Shards in the Group 3 $125,000 Up and Coming Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on August 22 before running in the Golden Rose Stakes.
