In a shocking turn of events, Golden Slipper contenders Smart Missile and Fast And Sexy were scratched from the $3.5 million race seconds before the race was due to run.
Smart Missile was the $6 second favourite for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds and his devastating scratching left trainer Anthony Cummings both angry and dejected.
Cummings believed that the young colt’s scratching was unnecessary and felt more should have been done to make sure it was the right decision.
“To put Glen (Boss) back on and go for a trot and see if he’s right or wrong would have been the sensible thing to do,” Cummings said after the race.
Smart Missile was an excellent winning chance for the Slipper, and was the only horse to have ever upstaged Sepoy during his young career.
Sepoy relished the opportunity to race without his biggest threat, and won the Slipper by a staggering two lengths.
Smart Missile will now have to wait for another day to make his mark on the two-year-old racing scene.
