Smart filly Scarlet Rain can secure a start in the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 19 if she can win again at Randwick on Saturday.
Scarlet Rain is the winner of her only race start when she scored on debut in an 1100m two year old plate at Rosehill on January 2 and steps out again in the $85,000 More Than Just Winning Plate (1000m) on the weekend.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse is hoping to secure a run in the world’s richest two year old race for her new stable clients Darby Racing and by the way the Manhattan Rain filly has been performing on the tracks, she will be hard to beat this week.
Waterhouse reported that Scarlet Rain was very impressive in her Tuesday morning gallop at Randwick when she dashed over 600m, running the final 200m in 11 seconds.
“She will most likely run on Saturday and she will again be very hard to beat,” Waterhouse wrote on her website.
Stable foreman Mark Newnham agrees with Waterhouse and also has a high opinion of the Scarlet Rain.
“She measures up. She’s a pretty good filly, a real natural,” Newnham told AAP.
“She’s already won a city race and if she can win another one, her prize money would just about get her in the Golden Slipper.”
Scarlet Rain earned $48,750 in winning prizemoney plus a $20,000 BOBS Bonus for her effort at Rosehill and will win the same amount if she can keep her unbeaten record intact on Saturday.
Waterhouse had to abandon plans to run Scarlet Rain in the $2m Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 9 when she didn’t want to back up the filly after her race day debut the previous week.
Scarlet Rain was a $100,000 yearling purchase for Darby Racing at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sales.
Scarlet Rain will jump one from the outside in barrier eleven on Saturday with Tim Clark taking over from Tommy Berry who was very impressed with her debut win.
“She is very talented. She’s got speed, she relaxes and has a nice turn of foot,” Berry said.
Berry will ride the Kris Lees trained Twist Tops in Saturday’s Two Years Old Plate.
In early betting for the Golden Slipper Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au, Scarlet Rain is rated a $41 chance but her price is likely to tumble if she can overcome her wide barrier and register win number two this weekend.
Magic Millions 2yo Classic winner Capitalist heads the Golden Slipper Stakes market order at $3.60 ahead of Astern at $9, Calliope at $13 and Extreme Choice and Yankee Rose at $15.
