Jim Byrne on Jumbo Prince looked like he had the race in his keeping when he shot the Michael Nolen trained four year old to the front at the 250m mark but the top weight Rudy was able to do enough to share the winning purse.

Jumbo Prince had been heavily supported in the betting ring, firming in from $4.20 to be the $3.30 favourite and Byrne had given him the run of the race in fourth position on the fence behind the leader Heart Of A Warrior ($8).

Rudy also had some followers and firmed in the betting from $7 to $6 and settled near the tail of the field for Blake Shinn.

Shinn had to wind up Rudy in the straight and the five year old under his 59kg was able to make up many lengths over the concluding stage to catch Jumbo Prince.

The Robert Heathcote trained Bewhatyouwannabe ($9) also made up good ground from the back to fill third sport.

Jumbo Prince had put the writing on the wall that a return to the winner’s circle wasn’t far off with a last start third to Coolring in the Listed $100,000 Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast last Saturday.

Trainer Helen Page has done aa good job to freshen up Ruby following a Sydney Autumn Carnival campaign that saw him run ninth to Winx in the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 2 followed by a fifth to Guardini in the Group 3 $150,000 Sharp Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 16.
