$101 outsider Vienna Miss has scored the big upset of 2017 South Australian Derby Day; maintaining to the line to win the Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) from resounding favourite Petition.

Jockey Katelyn Mallyon was checked by doctors after a slight mishap at the barriers prior to jump, but the in-form hoop confidently rode Vienna Miss forward from the gates and took a positive position close to the early pace.

Finding a gap between runners rounding onto the final straight, Vienna Miss threaded the needle and pulled a length clear of her closest rivals; maintaining a strong-enough sprint to hold off the late challenge of Petition; Chapel City also running on well to finish third.

Vienna Miss has shown plenty of ability throughout her racing career, but she has been reasonably inconsistent and finished ninth in the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1300m) a fortnight ago.

In being crowned the 2017 Adelaide Guineas winner, Vienna Miss posted only her second ever triumph and first since the early stages of last year’s Spring Carnival.

Second-placed Petition is a star in the making and was undoubtedly still the run of the race despite not quite making up the distance on Vienna Miss.

The Foxwedge filly was seeking her third win from as many starts in the Adelaide Guineas, having made light work of notable company in both the Buxton Real Estate Maiden (1225m) and William Newton Handicap (1400m) through April.

Chapel City was another horse who carried benefit into the Adelaide Guineas, having failed to fire before finishing tenth in the Nitschke Stakes two weeks ago.
