Rekindled Interest has been the best supported runner in the lead up to the 2011 Cox Pate and trainer Jim Conlan says it’s more than deserved.
Rekindled Interest was deemed the best track worker by many experts yesterday morning and that’s continued across today where he continues to progress in outstanding condition.
Conlan says things have gone absolutely perfectly all preparation and it’s all set to come together on Saturday.
He too agrees his work was brilliant yesterday but says it means nothing unless he can transfer it to the Cox Plate.
“It is only track work so you don’t get too carried away with it, but what you’d like to see is the work rekindled interest did,” he said.
“This will be him at his best, he’ll be absolutely cherry ripe for this race.”
That’s exactly what you want to hear coming into a race of this calibre and Conlan says there’s not a single thing he wishes had gone differently.
“He hasn’t had one day where we’ve had to make an adjustment,” he said.
Highlighting the progression from his first up run in the Aurie Star Handicap to now is the physical makeup of the horse.
“He went to the Valley yesterday 6kg heavier than what he went to the Aurie Star,” he said.
“By the time we get to Saturday he’ll be pretty much the same weight.”
That shows just how far he’s come given he’s not only stripped fitter from earlier in the prep, he’s actually then gained weight by putting on extra muscle.
Another plus for the horse coming into this weekend is that blinkers will go on in an attempt to make that shift from slow to go even slicker.
“I’ve kept in my mind that I wanted to have the blinkers on him in the Cox Plate,” Conlan said.
“The one flaw that he has is there’s a little bit of a lag between when you ask him to go and when he hits top gear.”
Without getting too carried away the fact remains winning the Cox Plate is going to be a hard assignment with the likes of Helmet, Pinker Pinker, Jimmy Choux, Glass Harmonium and Descarado all in great form.
“It’s going to be an enormous task for him…you run into such strong opposition,” he said.
“If Helmet got it all together and won the race we’d be looking back on this year as the emerging of a top horse.”
One big bonus Rekindled Interest has is he won’t be forced to do a lot of work in the early stages and can effectively just hold his position from gate three.
“The race will unfold around him to an extent and we can just sit where we want to be without doing a lot of work.”
