David Payne is just one of dozens of trainers keeping an anxious eye skyward throughout today and tomorrow as Sydney plays the waiting game with lingering wet weather.

While the downpours haven’t been at the levels felt a few weeks ago, they have been enough to strip Rosehill of a good rating and too much more could see it head back into the slow range.

Payne has multiple runners on the Rosehill card tomorrow but he says his major chance Praecido is one which won’t be phased regardless of the track conditions.

“It doesn’t worry him he’s versatile, he can handle heavy or a firm track,” he said.

The stats back this up as well with the four year old having placed across all types of ground during his career.

That is an issue they are hoping to address tomorrow though, placing, the horse always being close but struggling to reach that extra gear.

To put it into perspective he’s raced 21 times for only the single win and five placings.

In addition to that though he’s finished fourth or fifth another nine times.

Payne is confident though that the ability he’s shown will soon return race victories.

” He was very immature as a baby, he’s settled down now though and running well,” he said.

The Kingston Town Stakes is a hugely important third up test for the horse as he looks to prove his suitability for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

“He’s in all the cup’s races and we’ll look at the Metropolitan as well…he’s got tt win these races if he’s going to be competitive,” Payne said.

While he doesn’t field a runner in the main event Golden Rose tomorrow Payne will still be an eager onlooker supporting friend and fellow South African ex-pat Lionel Cohen’s horse Aeronautical.

He rates him as a live chance but says for him a soft surface might not be ideal.

“If there’ no more rain it should be fine,” he said.

“He’s a very good judge of a horse, he always seems to find a good one so it can’t be luck.”
