Gai Waterhouse continues to build her Golden Slipper stocks with an impressive win by Pierro in the Group 2 $200,000 Patinack Farm Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill today.
A drifter in the betting Pierro was a slow to leave the barriers and moved through the field coming to the home turn and when Nash Rawiller let the two year old go at the 300m he looked the winner.
Hugh Bowman on the John Thompson trained Hussousa shared the lead into the straight and made a race of it until the 100m and fought on okay to finish second with Kyria running on for third.
Waterhouse has four of the top five chances in the market for the Group 1 $3.5m AAMI Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on April 7 behind brilliant Blue Diamond winner Samaready who is ruling favourite at $4.40.
The next in the betting belong to Waterhouse and with Pierro now moving higher up the order, a real traffic jam is developing with her runners.
Waterhouse’s two year old winners Raceway and Driefontein are up there along with Blue Diamond and Magic Millions runner up No Looking Back all under $13.
After Pierro missed the start slightly Rawiller didn’t panic and positioned him midfield before making his move coming to the home turn.
Pierro eased from to start at $4.50 while runner up Hussousa firmed to start the $3.10 favourite.
Waterhouse will probably give the Lonhro colt one more run before heading into the Golden Slipper and said she still has a lot of horse to work with.
“He is a very very good horse and since his win in October you have seen some pretty exciting horses come out of the yard and he will certainly have his time cut out for him on slipper day,” Waterhouse said.
“There is still a lot to work with and he is a horse that will improve out of that run, although he will definitely not want to be missing the start to much otherwise he might have to do a Belle Du Jour,” she added.
