Pierro kept his unbeaten Sydney record intact and made it back to back Group 1 weight for age victories on a track that wasn’t really to his liking and looks the one to beat in the Group 1 $2m BMW Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick in two weeks.

Winning jockey Nash Rawiller reported after the race that Pierro wasn’t completely happy in the soft ground putting in a couple of awkward strides during the race.

“I don’t think he really handled the slow ground,” Rawiller said.

“I know it’s sort of hard to say but I was quite concerned a few times in the run, he kept hitting patches and dipping and diving and I suppose most of them are.”

“I was very confident from where I was I could win.”

“This in is very special.”

Gai Waterhouse was very excited after winning her second Group 1 of the day after taking out the Group 1 $3.5m Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m) with her filly Overreach.

“Today I really got goose bumps,” Waterhouse said.

“Today was something very special. He’s a special horse, he’s a sexy horse, he’s the best.”

Rawiller kept Pierro ($1.35) out of trouble in the run and pulled him to the outside on the home turn, giving the three year old a clear run to the line, overhauling tough Kiwi Group 1 performer King Mufhasa ($91) who put up a mighty performance to hold for second with Shoot Out (13) running on strongly for third.
